Gratitude

by Gary Wallace

“Thank you for your service.” Man, I hate that expression. Thank me for what? What did I do? Sure, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. Yes, I went to Vietnam. But, so what? What did we accomplish there? Nothing. It was a complete waste. It served no purpose and cost thousands of lives and much destruction. I regret having been a part of it. When people thank me for my service I cringe. They bought into the myth of that misadventure and are simply expressing their gratitude. I respond with, “You’re welcome but don’t ask me to do it again.”
